A student on attachment with Simpson Strong-Tie ended has helped the company design a new range of glulam connectors.

Max Haddad, who has since gained a first class degree in civil engineering at Nottingham Trent University, initially had a work placement with the company and used the experience for his dissertation. He returned for a summer attachment during which he led a glulam research project.

“He spent three months looking into applications of our existing products for use with glulam and then designed a new range of connectors to cater to all sectors, from residential to industrial applications,” said Simpson Strong-Tie managing director Malcolm Paulson.

Mr Haddad, who is aiming for a career in civil or structural engineering, said the experience broadened his “understanding of engineering principles”.
