The Stairways Group has strengthened its market position after acquiring Richard Burbidge Group’s staircase manufacturing division Brankbrook for an undisclosed sum.

Walsall-based Brankbrook, which has annual sales of around £3m, manufactures staircases and other joinery products for major and regional housebuilders.

Stairways Group managing director Roger Stevens said: “This is a very positive move, reinforcing our position as one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of staircases in the UK and giving us resources to expand our customer base further.”

Mr Stevens said he was delighted with the expansion at a time when the market is not as buoyant as in recent years.

Richard Burbidge Group chairman and chief executive Richard Burbidge said: “We acquired Brankbrook in 1997 and believed it could form the hub for a national staircase manufacturing network. We have continued to look for opportunities to expand by acquisition but have not found the right fit.

“At the same time we are seeing growth in other areas of our business, for example stairparts, mouldings, flooring and outdoor products, and there are good opportunities to expand both organisally and by acquisition in these areas.”.

Richard Burbidge Ltd will continue to supply stairpart components, including spindles, newels and handrails to Brankbrook and, potentially, other parts of the Stairways Group.

The Stairways Group, which also supplies door sets, has bases in Leamington Spa, Cannock and Welshpool, the latter trading as MDF Profiles.
