German pencil maker Staedtler is planting trees in the Malaysian jungle in a social responsibility pilot project.

The company, which produces 120 million pencils a year in Malaysia using about 6,000 tonnes of jelutong timber, said it was planting trees to help replenish the green canopy of forest lost through logging and uncontrolled development. It also hopes to use the timber within about 15 years for making pencils.

The pilot project in the Kemasul forest reserve could be followed by other planting initiatives if it proves viable.
