The proposed International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures will be under the spotlight at TIMCON 2002 at the National Agriculture Centre, Stoneleigh on April 17-18.

Manufacturers and users of wood based packaging will also be able to learn more about the newly-introduced UK Wood Packaging Material Marking Programme (UK WPMMP) and the way both programmes will affect them.

Speaking about UK WPMMP, TIMCON president Graham Nicklin said: ‘The objective is to introduce and register a special wood marking process throughout the UK which will confirm wood packaging material as being of UK manufacture and meeting certain prescribed phytosanitary requirements.

‘More and more exporters are demanding such an assurance in response to their clients’ demands, based on third country import requirements. It also allows the re-use of wood packaging on the return trip to Europe without further treatment.’

The International Standard could be adopted within the European Community as early as next year.
