The Forest Stewardship Council has launched a public consultation on a special label to differentiate wood products coming from FSC-certified communities and small or low intensity managed forest (SLIMF) producers around the world.

Currently, there is no differentiation between products from industrial operations and those from community or SLIMF operations, which frequently face similar disadvantages in the market, especially with small volumes.

FSC said a special label could provide new sales opportunities to community and SLIMF producers, as well as large companies that buy forest products from these producers.

The consultation period for the first draft of an international policy on the special label runs until December 15.
