The decision to restart the programme under the Southern Pine Council banner was taken by the Southern Forest Products Association (SFPA) and Southeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (SLMA).

"Both associations look forward to working as one voice for the global promotion of southern pine products," said SFPA chairman Joe Kusar.

"The Southern Pine Council is an established moniker and can serve our industry for additional areas of co-operation in the future."

SLMA chairman Chris deMilliano said the campaign would enable its sawmilling members to interact with importers and other customers overseas more effectively.

"Online supplier listings will increase the availability of southern pine products worldwide," he said.

The SFPA had engaged in promotion programmes for more than 30 years through it being a funded sponsor of the US Department of Agriculture’s foreign agricultural service, operating under the American Softwoods banner. This has included international trade fair appearances, trade missions to key markets and direct contact with importers.

The SFPA recently announced that shipments of southern pine lumber increased in 2013 – the fourth consecutive year of growth.

Shipments totalled 15 billion board feet, 5% up on the previous year and 27% above 2009 shipments.
