Imports for the period were 34.8 million lineal metres, down from 254 million lineal metres a year ago.

The sharp drop contrasts to the steady growth in mouldings imports recorded in the 10 years to 2004. Last year saw a slight fall.

Imports from Brazil and Chile witnessed the biggest decline – down 87% and 91% respectively.

Traders put the trend down to oversupply and currency exchange rates.
