Sawn softwood imports are predicted to rise by 37,000m³ (0.5%) this year, according to the latest forecast by The Timber Trade Federation’s National Softwood Division (NSD).

The revised forecast, which takes into account 2007 actual volumes, indicates a “virtually flat” performance in 2008, with imports predicted to reach about 7.95 million m³.

UK production is expected to rise by similar levels as imports but exports are expected to be 5% lower than last year.

“Consequently, sawn softwood consumption in the UK is expected to rise by around 100,000m³ or 1% in 2008, to reach a level of approximately 10.4 million m³,” the NSD said.
