The boiler runs on offcuts from the distribution centre’s sawmills and produces a fraction of the carbon emissions caused by fossil fuels. It runs at 90% efficiency, causing significantly less waste than conventional boilers. The energy it creates will be used for power and lighting at the site.
As well as efficiency savings, the £40,000 boiler qualifies for a £12,000 government payback scheme, which will be reinvested to further improve the sites efficiency.
“The initial outlay may seem a lot, but at Snows we are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint,” said Bob Kirkland, operations director. “Over time, the energy efficiency of the boiler will ensure it pays for itself so the decision to install it was an easy one to make.”
