A stair part manufacturer has built up a £1m a year small mouldings business in just 14 months.
Cheshire Mouldings, of St Helens, decided to branch out from its traditional operations after customers kept enquiring if it could supply mouldings, partly because of its name.
It is now the fastest-growing arm of the company, supplying items such as beadings and quadrants to timber merchants, joinery manufacturers and DIY shops nationwide.
Managing director John Carney said that overall the company was on track to break £6m in total turnover this year, up from £4.5m last year. He said sales have been boosted by a number of customers choosing the firm to source both small mouldings and stair components.
Mr Carney hopes to increase mouldings sales by £750,000 this year. He has recruited Kim McCallum from competitor Richard Burbidge as sales manager for Yorkshire, a region targeted by the company for “a big push”.
He said: “The growth has been tremendous. The mouldings are a bonus, so we have everything to gain but our competitors have everything to lose.”
Cheshire Mouldings, set up 15 years ago, has increased its turnover rapidly since moving to St Helens five years ago.
