Smaller companies in the joinery industry are beating their bigger rivals in the profit margin stakes, according to a report which has just been published.

Heading up the “top 10” table in the Business Ratio annual report published by The Prospect Shop is Manchester Cabins which recorded a 24.2% pre-tax profit margin from £1.7m sales during 2001/2002 – nearly seven times the industry average result of 3.6%.

Jeld-Wen UK Ltd easily recorded the largest sales turnover for 2001/2002, with £112.6m. However, its pre-tax profit margin was minus 3.9%.

Five of the top 10 turnover companies managed to equal or exceed the industry average profit margin. These were the LS Group (10.2%), Donaldson Timber Engineering (4.5%), Fife Joinery Manufacturing (4.3%), Rollalong (4%) and Palgrave Brown (3.6%).
