Plans to quadruple the native woodland area of the Kinloch and Kyleakin Hills on the Isle of Skye have been given the official seal of approval.

Forestry Commission Scotland aims to establish more than 900ha of native oak and birch woodland by planting new trees, encouraging natural regeneration of others and removing non-native conifers.

Energy services company BP is contributing £630,000 funding to help restore the woodland and other habitats as part of its commitment to the Scottish Forest Alliance.

The project’s environmental impact assessment took more than two years to complete.
