The new facility, which covers 18,000ft2, was officially opened by celebrity gardener and keen recycler Dermot O’Neill.

He said CJ Sheeran was leading the way through its extensive waste recycling operations and added: “Holding licences to dispose of waste from county councils across Ireland, the management at CJ Sheeran made a conscious decision to recycle rather than merely remove and dump waste wood products.”

Wood pallets collected by CJ Sheeran from customers across Ireland are returned to the Mountrath facility where pallet dismantlers grade each one individually to see if they can be recycled.

Partially damaged pallets are repaired but those beyond salvage are shredded and converted into a range of different materials such as animal bedding, landscaping material and biofuel for energy projects.

Managing director Mark Sheeran said: “Having the pleasure of working with wood in our timber gates and furniture division makes us sensitive to the different and varied uses wood can offer. Recycling is just another way of ensuring we extract the maximum use out of this valuable commodity.”
