North American forestland totalling 60 million acres has now undergone third party certification against the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standard, with another 27 million acres pending.

SFI’s seventh annual progress report also says 149 companies and organisations have complied with the standard, with an additional 51 companies and organisations joining the programme in 2001 and 2002.

Despite the progress, SFI acknowledges that a single certification scheme cannot supply enough volume of credibly certified wood products or address the needs of all landowners. It therefore continues to support mutal recognition of other certification systems.
