An extra £1m is being made available to breathe life into Scotland’s urban woodlands.
Scottish forestry minister Rhona Brankin announced the Forestry Commission Scotland cash injection for the Woods In & Around Towns challenge fund while visiting Craigmillar Castle Park, Edinburgh, which the scheme is funding with a £48,000 grant.
The fund, set up to encourage landowners to manage neglected urban woodlands and improve the lives of people, already had £3.5m allocated.
Ms Brankin also launched a publication giving advice and information on how landowners can use woodlands to “green” towns and cities.
The challenge fund, which runs until April 2008, is already helping 47 projects to give urban woodlands a makeover.
