About £655,000 will also go towards the B836 timber haul route in Argyll and Bute with £318,000 going to the Arran link road in North Ayrshire.

Scottish forestry minister Sarah Boyack said much of the country’s timber resource was accessible only by rural roads not designed to meet modern road haulage needs.

She said the challenge was to find ways to move the timber from maturing forests to mills with minimal impact on local communities.
