Arup, which has produced a string of reports about the laminated oak trussed roof since a 12ft strut sprang free from its metal connecting shoe, says the roof remained stable under a worst Case scenario analysis.

The company proposes to fit straps as a temporary strengthening measure in order to allow MEPs back into the chamber by mid-May. Permanent repairs using purpose-made stainless steel fixings will then be added during the summer recess.

Arups’s initial investigation revealed that one metal bolt fixing the beam to its connecting shoe had failed and the other was missing.
