Scottish energy minister Fergus Ewing is meeting his UK counterpart today to urge Westminster to take a similar line to Scotland over the large biomass power plant threat to the forest products industry, according to the Herald Scotland.

The Scottish government recently outlined its plans to remove subsidies from large-scale biomass electricity generation due to their impact in pushing up timber prices and risking hundreds of jobs in the traditional wood industries.

The report says that Mr Ewing does not believe there is enough wood in the UK to run a cost-effect large biomass plant.

He said that if every piece of commercial UK wood went to biomass, it would supply less than a third of the fuel required by 2020 in the UK government’s biomass plan.

Mr Ewing said Westminster should remove the subsidies given to power companies.
