A survey by SCA Timber has found mixed attitudes within the trade to qualifications.

It found 84% of respondents felt having trained staff was an advantage but just 15% requested timber-related qualifications when advertising for new staff.

Of the companies surveyed, 84% said they ran their own training schemes; 37% said it was provided ‘as and when’; 12% said twice a year; and 8% said on an annual basis. Just 4% gave induction courses for staff new to the trade.

SCA Timber’s managing director Rob Simpson said the trade needed to offer structured career paths and training, as today’s young people expected qualifications to play an important part in their careers.
