SCA has inaugurated a €35m plant for the production of solid wood shelving for IKEA’s range of products.

The Kramfors factory processes timber from the sawmill at Bollstabruk and will produce at least one million Gorm shelving units per year.

SCA Timber and TräTeam have developed a production set up designed to cut the costs of the supply chain from raw material to product in stores.

Around 45,000m³ of pine is required annually for the operation, with the raw material being planed, scanned and trimmed to finished shelving component before robots nail the components into shelf segments.

The shelving components are then fed into an advanced packaging machine where they are flat-packed into cartons together with a bag of screws and instructions.

Products are distributed to IKEA stores across the Nordic region, Benelux and Germany.
