Changes are being proposed to the timber industry in Saskatchewan, Canada, in a bid to avoid paying heavy US import duties again later this year.

The Saskatchewan government’s proposed changes to the Forest Resources Management Act include allowing for competitive bidding on new forest management leases plus giving licence holders the right to sell some of their harvest on the open market.

The proposals are designed to meet US demands for a more market-based forestry system in Canada. They will be included in an application to the US after the American government publishes guidelines for imposing duties on imports this summer.
