Welfare projects are being launched by Sarawak Timber Association (STA) to help rural communities affected by logging activities.

STA, which announced the plans at its annual meeting in Kuching, said financial aid will also be extended to other poor communities and victims of natural disasters.

Meanwhile, annual government grants received by STA are enabling it to join with government agencies in combating anti-logging/tropical timber campaigns by international environmental organisations.

The grants, which total about M$12m annually, are based on volumes of hill forest species harvested.
