SAM Mouldings has won another environmental achievement award for its £1.2m combined heat and power (CHP) plant.

It was presented with a Green Heroes 2008 Wall Shield by botanist and TV personality David Bellamy on June 2.

The Green Heroes award follows on from the company’s receipt of an International Green Apple Award, which was also presented for its Energy from Waste project and CHP plant.

The Green Heroes award is a step up from the Green Apple prize, recognising “projects that enhance the environment and [companies] that wish to share their experience and knowledge with the world”.

“Organisations that go the extra mile and become Green Heroes are demonstrating a serious commitment to the world around them,” said Green Heroes national organiser Roger Wolens. “They invest in a better future for us all and deserve to be recognised for their efforts”

SAM said the CHP plant will save it around £500,000 a year through the elimination of electricity costs and woodwaste disposal, as well as extra revenue from the sale of excess power back to the national grid.
