Salvagers have been battling to remove around 2,000 tonnes of the estimated 20,000 tonnes of logs on board a ship that ran aground off Gisborne, New Zealand nearly three weeks ago in a bid to refloat the vessel.

The Panama-registered Jody F Millennium, operated by Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine Co, hit a sandbar in heavy seas on February 6, spilling around 40 tonnes of fuel oil onto the beach.

Previously, helicopters had been used to remove around 250 tonnes of logs from the ship, one-by-one.

The ship was successfully refloated this week.
