Scottish window maker Fife Joinery Manufacturing Ltd (FJM) has confirmed plans to lay off 44 full-time staff by the end of this month in response to below-expectation sales to western Europe.

The job losses would be shared across all areas of the business, a spokesperson said.

Specialising in the manufacture of roof windows and employing more than 200 people at its base in Glenrothes, FJM has built a significant proportion of its turnover around sales to other European countries such as Germany.

But sales of windows in western Europe have not been as good as anticipated, leaving the company with an over-capacity according to the spokesperson. The disappointing level of overseas orders was attributed to the tougher economic conditions prevailing in some of the importing countries.

The UK had always accounted for the lion’s share of company turnover and this market was still ‘fine’, the spokesperson added.
