All ships carrying timber deck cargoes secured by wire lashings should be fitted with a quick-release jettison device in case of emergency, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) recommends.

Its suggestion follows the investigation into the grounding of the timber-carrying Kodima in gales off Cornwall on February 2 last year while en route to Libya.

MAIB said the Kodima’s problems started when the deck cargo shifted in heavy seas. Wire lashings had not been checked for 32 hours and the grounding may have been prevented if the timber could have been quickly jettisoned.
