The Sabah government is to investigate renewal of timber licences to prevent timber licence holders from misusing their licences to log unauthorised areas.

Chief minister Chong said the state government had evidence of illegal logging where a timber licence was renewed 10 times for an area which could be cleared in just six months, and the government had to be strict in the renewing of timber licences.

‘What is important now is to stop renewing licences where the concession is a minimum area that should have been logged a long time ago. Licence holders go next door and whack all the timber. In view of this the state government had to exercise caution in the renewal of timber licences to safeguard the interest of the state and future generation,’ he said.
