Södra has started commercial production of new composite material DuraPulp as an alternative to plastic.

The company says a large number of companies are interested in the material, made at the Väro facility from specially selected pulp and a biopolymer.

“We are currently working with a number of partners who are testing DuraPulp as part of their production processes,” said Södra spokesperson Henrik Wettergren.

Södra originally decided to develop the material with research company Innventia to create a fibre-based material which could be a biodegradable alternative to plastic. It says the material’s benefits include moisture resistance, strength and hardness.

A lamp and a children’s chair have already been made out of DuraPulp and attracted “huge interest”.
