The concern over Russia’s decision to raise roundwood export tariffs has continued, with the European Commission vice-president Günter Verheugen joining the debate.

Mr Verheugen met with Russia’s industry and trade minister Viktor Khristenko last weekend to discuss a new EU-Russia treaty governing a range of economic, political and trade issues.

This included the ongoing debate around Russia’s decision to raise its export tariffs for raw timber and the impact on Europe.

“The vice-president continues to firmly believe…that EU wood and paper products still lack a level playing field for access to third country markets as a result of high tariffs and non-tariff barriers applied by some trade partners,” said Ton Van Lierop, spokesperson for for Mr Verheugen.
