Russia is to use photos taken by space satellites in its war on illegal logging.

The country’s Federal Timber Agency said space and aerial photography would be introduced shortly in a new operational monitoring system.

The system will inititally control one million hectares before spreading across the country within three years.

Photos will be used as evidence of timber theft in court trials.

The agency has also called for higher timber export duties, with the biggest rates suggested for sawn wood, plywood and veneer.
