Tropical hardwood specialist Rougier is to open a third mill in Gabon, its seventh in the Congo basin.

Situated in Mevang, the new factory is to have an annual capacity of 14,000m3 of sawnwood and will mostly process okoumé for use in construction applications including windows and doors.

The sawmill will provide 85 jobs in the local community, and Rougier added that employees will benefit from environmental best practice awareness training.

This is in line with Rougier’s “strategy of driving business growth through sustainable forestry management”, and includes using timber from Rougier’s ISO 14001 and Kerhout-certified concessions.

The French firm added that it intends to double output at the Mevang facility by 2009, as well as increase the workforce to 120.
