Rougier has stated that it wants to have sustainable development certification awarded to all of its concessions, including those in Gabon and Congo, by 2009 and has hailed the verification of its timber resources in Cameroon as “strategically important”.

“This new certification is part of a strategically important plan for the group,” said Francis Rougier, president of the group.

“The certification enables a company to prove the conformity of its environmental policy by demonstrating compliance with independent requirements for creating, implementing and maintaining principles of sustainable development.”

Following on from the certification of its forests in Cameroon, Rougier has said that it is planning FSC and Pan African Forest Certification audits for its Gabon resources, as well as implementing “sound environmental management processes” in Congo in preparation for future certification.
