Already £280,000 has been racked up in alternative accommodation, equipment hire and temporary repair costs, while a further £130,000 is being spent on the purchase and installation of a permanent design solution. Scaffolding and additional costs could push the final repair bill through the £500,000 barrier, according to a Parliament spokesperson.

The design solution involves a stainless steel dowel being inserted through the shoe and strut. “Once fitted, only the outside edge of the 20mm diameter dowel would be seen, which, with suitable buffing and polishing, is unlikely to be visible,” said the spokesperson.

Completion of the repair is anticipated by early September.
