Numerous firecrews were called to the University of Northumbria on the evening of April 9, when fire destroyed the steel/timber frame three-storey structure. Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Ken Easton, chief executive of Robertson Timberkit, said the development, for RM Accommodation, had consisted of a steel frame with timber panels on top.

“We have been speaking with the owners and they are keen to get the development completed as soon as possible,” said Mr Easton.

“We’re doing everything we can to help them and make production facilities available.

“Statistically, there have been far fewer fires in timber frame developments, and completed timber frame buildings are less prone to fire than in cavity construction,” he said.

Armiger Joinery Ltd was the contractor erecting the timber part of the structure.
