RIdgeons Timber Engineering has supplied a major order for monopitch and stub trusses for the roof of a new motorway services hotel.
The 76-room Days Hotel, operated by the Welcome Break group, has been built at the Birchanger Green Services complex on the M11 near Stansted airport.
Mechanical and electrical requirements on the building meant a maintenance walkway had to be constructed the length of the structure. As a result, Ridgeons had to fabricate the 250-truss roof framwork in asymmetric sections. The larger stub trusses, containing the box-out for the access corridor, were 13m long and the mono-pitch trusses 6.5m.
“The spans involved and speed of programme ruled out using a cut roof,” said Richard Price of the project architect and structural design engineer Baxter Glaysher Consulting. “Trussed rafters offered certainty in delivery and price and speed of erection was very good.”
The roof, he added, was completed on schedule.
