The UK construction industry could be billions of pounds better off by following the principles of the Rethinking Construction programme, a newly-published report claims.

DTI minister Nigel Griffiths, launching the “Demonstrating Success through Rethinking Construction” report, urged more companies to get behind the initiative, which aims to showcase innovations in products and performance through demonstration projects, plus highlight best practice.

The publication claims that if one-third of the industry applied the principles to its projects then client construction costs could be reduced by £1.4bn; accident costs could drop by £1.2bn; and there might be an additional £446m in profit.

Mr Griffiths also announced that Rethinking Construction has now changed its name to Constructing Excellence, with Professor Dennis Lenard appointed as the new chief executive.
