Specialist sash and casement window manufacturer Refurb-A-Sash has started using waste timber for fuel to boost environmental performance.

The London-based firm, which specialises in producing pieces for period properties and conservation projects, is burning offcuts, chips and dust to generate heat for the factory. This has cut the number of lorries taking materials to landfill by 50% and reduced its gas bill to zero.

“The economics for us becoming green are overwhelming,” said managing director Adrian Thompson. “The resultant reduction of noise and carbon emissions has made a positive and significant impact on the [Richmond-upon-Thames] area.”

Other green business practices undertaken by Refurb-A-Sash include switching to electric vehicles, which, according to Mr Thompson, has also proven to make “good business sense”.
