New records for the consumption and production of parquet were set in ‘traditional’ European countries during 2000 according to the European Federation of the Parquet Industry (FEP).

But FEP chairman Dieter Betz warned members at the 45th general assembly in Dresden last month to beware of overcapacity coupled, with an economic slowdown in the coming year.

FEP secretary-general Filip De Jaeger told delegates that parquet flooring production during 2000 increased by 3.6% overall to reach a volume of 63 million m², while consumption boosted to more than 80.6 million m² – an 8.7% increase on 1999.

The general assembly gave the go-ahead for a public relations campaign to promote parquet and approved a fire test programme.

It also agreed to the introduction of an ‘FEP Charter’ for current and new members.
