Scottish logging company SWL Ltd has posted annual pre-tax profits of £554,000 on the back of strong demand for domestically-produced timber and biomass products.

SWL, the holding company of Scottish Woodlands – the largest supplier of private sector timber in Scotland – said the return to profit in 2009/10 follows a break-even position the year before.

Sales were also up to £46.2m from £40.2m as 840,000 tonnes of timber was harvested, a rise from 690,000 tonnes in 2008/09.

It also reported strong interest from investors seeking to purchase either land for the planting of new forests or the acquisition of existing forest properties.

SWL chairman Tom Bruce-Jones said the group had achieved “solid progress”, which was expected to continue.

Scottish Woodlands markets timber to more than 100 industrial wood users.
