The quality of entries for this year’s Wood Awards was described as “prodigious” by the compere for the presentations, architectural journalist and author Ruth Slavid.

The event, on October 14, drew an audience of 170, including architects, designers, engineers, furniture makers and representatives of the timber industry.

The competition itself, which recognises achievement in the use of timber in structural applications, interiors and furniture, attracted more than 200 entries.

Ms Slavid said that there was increasing criticism of the use of “spurious timber detail” in construction as a token nod to sustainability.

“But the Wood Awards entries show not just an understanding of the material, but a genuine recognition of its environmental benefits,” she said. “Their use of wood is not just playing lip service.”

She said the winners combined “excellent execution with ingenuity”.

Outgoing judges’ chairman, architect Giles Downes, also praised the standard of entries. He announced his successor as architect Michael Morrison.

The winner of the top Wood Awards Gold trophy was the Kings Place Concert Hall in London.
