CLT “sourced from sustainable forests” has been specified for the new eco-friendly building, which is designed to meet the club’s environmental policy. A combined heat and power plant will provide energy for the structure.

A formal planning application will be submitted to the local authority soon before a tender process begins. The building will feature changing rooms, training facilities and various areas including rehabilitation, medical, leisure and catering.

A 20m swimming pool, hydrotherapy and fitness pool, media suite, administrative space, presentation area and a fitness centre double the size of the club’s existing gymnasium will also feature.

“We have one of football’s great stadiums and we are delighted to now be announcing plans for a training complex which will rival any in Europe,” said Newcastle United director of football Joe Kinnear.

Premiership club Newcastle celebrated becoming the world’s first carbon neutral football club in 2012.
