Premier Forest Products is to provide more than 200 sheets of structural-grade plywood as part of a challenge to construct a sustainable home in six days at the Grand Designs Live exhibition.
Some 235 sheets of UPM-Kymmene’s WISA-spruce plywood will be used throughout the build, which will see Kevin McCloud, presenter of the Grand Designs TV show, take on the role of project manager.
The House That Kevin Built has been designed by architect Duncan Baker Brown and will include a wealth of environmentally friendly products and materials, including straw bales, thatch and recycled mobile phones.
“The House That Kevin Built is an exciting and challenging project which we are very pleased to be involved with,” said Terry Edgell, director at Premier.
“The fact that the challenge is to produce a sustainable home sits comfortably with Premier’s own standpoint on the importance of making the most of the world’s only sustainable construction material, timber, and makes us a natural fit for the project.”
Channel 4 will be carrying a series of nightly shows throughout the duration of Grand Designs Live, which runs May 3-11 at ExCeL in London, and will follow the construction of the house from start to finish.
When it is completed, the building will be dismantled and move to the BRE in Hertfordshire, where it will go on public display.
