The most promising use of softwood in India appears to be in doors, windows, furniture and similar applications, according to the Random Lengths International report.

Imports of softwood veneer from the US rose by 35% in 2005 to 382,000m2, but were recorded at 77,744m2 last February – more than double the previous year’s rate.

India sources the bulk of its softwood requirements from European sources at present.

Tariffs on log and timber importers have additionally fallen from 40-45% to 5% for logs and 15% for timber, providing further encouragement for those seeking to export to India.

The species which have drawn the most interest at trade shows were identified as being higher grade Douglas fir and southern pine.
