Shadow chancellor Michael Portillo will be the guest speaker at this year’s TTJ Awards on September 13.

A member of parliament since 1984, Mr Portillo served as secretary of state for defence under John Major. After famously losing his seat in the 1997 election, he turned to a brief career in the media and went on a UK-wide speaking and opinion-gauging tour.

He returned to politics in November 1999 as MP for Kensington and Chelsea following the death of Alan Clarke.

He was appointed shadow chancellor just over a year ago

‘It’s great to have such a prominent political figure at the Awards,’ said TTJ editor Mike Jeffree. ‘I’m sure he’ll make an entertaining speech and, of course, by September, depending which way the election goes, he may be chancellor or leader of the opposition!’

The TTJ Awards will be held at the Savoy Hotel, London.
