The volume of forest products traded at the Port of London last year was unchanged from 2002 at two million tonnes.

In its newly-published 2003 annual report, the Port of London Authority (PLA) said the total volume of all trade sectors amounted to 51 million tonnes, compared to 51.2 million tonnes in 2002. Its pre-tax profits were £1.3m, down from £2.6m in 2002, while turnover was slightly up to £32.8m.

PLA chairman Simon Sherrard said: “The diversity of cargoes was maintained and we are seeing an increase in the volume of unitised cargo both by way of container ship and ro ro.”

The port has more than 70 independently owned terminals generating more than 35,000 jobs, with Tilbury being the largest container port for timber and paper.
