Newly-published government statistics confirm that the Port of London is the UK’s largest port for forest products.
The department of transport’s port statistics show that London handled two million tonnes of forest products in 2004 – an 18.9% market share of UK forest product handling.
Tilbury is the largest container port for timber and paper in London, which has about 70 independently owned terminals, handling 53.3 million tonnes of cargo in 2004.
Port of London Authority chief executive Richard Everitt said: “These figures underline the importance of the Port of London today. They emphasise the importance of the port to the capital city and to the wider south-east economy.”
