A total of 2.1 million tonnes of forest products were handled in the Port of London area in 2001.

The figure, appearing in the Port of London Authority’s newly-published 2001 annual review, includes timber, pulp, paper and other forest products and is down on the 2.3 million tonnes handled the previous year. The bulk of timber was handled at Tilbury, Tower Wharf and Rippleway, Barking.

Geoff Adam, head of promotion at the Port of London Authority, said: “London is one of the UK’s busiest commercial ports, with a wide variety of visiting commerical ships. With over 70 terminals, it is at the heart of the key markets of the UK’s capital and surrounding regions.”
