Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) National Forest Authority (NFA) has struck back at Greenpeace claims of illegal felling by declaring all logging operations as legal.

NFA said logging in the country is done through the issue of permits, with companies having to undergo 34 steps, including consultation and screening, before being granted forest concessions. Firms have to be registered under the Forestry Act 1991 prior to commencing forest operations.

The authority, which is “unaware” of any illegal logging activities, said PNG is a member of the International Tropical Timber Council, while Societe de Generale Surveillance monitors all log exports.
