About 120,000ha of forest are being cut down every year in Papua New Guinea, according to the Eco-Forestry Forum.

The environmental group said the logging industry was destroying the country’s forests despite government policies which demand sustainable use of forest resources.

It said details contained in a National Forest Authority report showed eight out of 12 provinces with commercial forests were now almost totally logged.

The group wants to see the government cracking down on the industry and initiating a large reforestation programme.
