PlyMart, once ranked in the top 100 US building supplies companies, is closing its wood supply business citing the nation’s housing slump and US$2m in unpaid bills.

At its height, the Georgia-based company operated at 34 locations with a turnover of US$360m. About 700 jobs have since been lost, culminating in the closure although 250 have been saved in the stairs and speciality products divisions.

Four lumber yards remain open during the liquidation. A spokesperson said: “We were just hammered by the market. It’s very frustrating.”
